I have received the gift of righteousness and reign as a king in life by Jesus Christ. - Romans 5:17

When we become Christians we are given the gift of righteousness. This puts us in the position of royalty by the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. That means in the eyes of God we are seen as equals with Christ.  Just as Jesus is seen as a king, to God we too are kings (or queens for you ladies).  That means we are no longer slaves, but heirs.  Heirs to the kingdom of heaven.

I used to think being a Christian meant I was a slave to God.  I had to do whatever God told me or else! I lived in a place always feeling at risk of losing God's good graces.
As this verse shows that is not our identity.  But what does it mean to be an heir to the kingdom of heaven?  We carry authority.  Not by what we have done, but merely the position we carry when we are reborn into his family.  By accepting Jesus as our savior we are placed beside Him in heaven.  That means the same power He carries, we carry here on earth.  The best way I can describe this is to think about what authority you carried in your home growing up.  What was your parents was yours. You did not ask if you could sleep in your bed, if you could eat the food in the fridge or use the property they had, you did it because that was your position in the family.  The same holds true of your heavenly father.  He has already given you all the resources you need to live an abundant life.  Will you not only recognize the gift of your righteousness but take it and put it to use? That is your position, use it!
